A look at vaccination decisions in divorce

There is no question that parenting from separate households can be challenging. When it comes to decisions on big decisions like education, health and religion, parents do not always agree on the best way to approach each individual issue. One hopes that the two parents will agree in how to best help their child on these issues.

When parents don't see eye to eye on these issues, a joint child custody arrangement can sometimes split legal custody of the child right down the middle with both parents. So if parents are on the opposite spectrum on a polarizing issue, such as whether or not to vaccinate the child, how will the issue be decided?

The short answer is that this legal custody issue may need to be determined in Pennsylvania family court. Since vaccination is a black or white issue -- in other words, either a child is vaccinated or they are not -- there is no middle ground to be had. It is the hope that the parents can come together on a decision on whether or not to vaccinate their child.

There are other legal custody decisions that can be very polarizing for parents and vaccination is not the only issue that can give parents trouble. Sharing child custody is all about compromise -- and some parents will have to compromise more than others. The best interests of the child should always be at the heart of these big legal custody decisions, even if parents do not always agree on what that entails.
