If charged with DUI, you could enter the ARD Program

You may only have had a couple of glasses of wine, but just that much alcohol affected your judgement. You went right through a stop sign, the police picked you up and charged you with DUI. It was a scary experience, the first time this sort of thing had ever happened to you, and you are worried about the consequences.

In the state of Pennsylvania, first offenders have the opportunity of entering the ARD pre-trial and pre-conviction program. An experienced criminal defense attorney can explain the program in detail.

About the ARD Program

The Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition Program helps qualified participants, most of whom are facing charges of driving under the influence. It is a pre-trial intervention program centered around substance abuse treatment. The program takes the place of punishment and in its requirements, is similar to probation. You will have to maintain employment, pay any required restitution and perform community service. In addition to seeking alcohol treatment, you will also have to attend driver safety classes and meetings monitored by the district attorney’s office.

Program Benefits

If you complete the program successfully, you will be able to avoid having a Pennsylvania DUI conviction go on your record, and the court may also reduce your license suspension period. The reason the program bears the “accelerated” title is that it provides for the prompt disposition of charges.

Seeking legal help

Since you have been charged with DUI, you are going to need legal representation, and you are encouraged to seek the help of a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. If you already have a DUI conviction, you will not be eligible to participate in the ARD program. You will also not qualify if you were previously arrested or if there was a minor in the car when you were charged with DUI. Your attorney will go over the legal ramifications with you and let you know if entering the ARD program is the right thing for you to do.
